Reach forward to those things ahead

"Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus."

Philippians 3:13-14

Reflection

Paul wrote this letter to the church at Philippi, which was a large city in Macedonia. When Paul was first establishing this church, he experienced resistance and hardship. He was thrown in jail and flogged. However, God used Paul’s time in prison to save the guards. After being freed, the Philippian church was formed. Fast forward to Paul writing this letter, and he is in prison again. Knowing a little bit about Paul’s experiences can give this passage deeper meaning. Despite his circumstances, this letter is filled with joy. Paul did not let his hardship defeat him. He wrote this letter to encourage the Philippian church. It can bring us encouragement today as well. Paul’s words are a reminder that our lives can be sustained by God. We can follow Paul’s example and not dwell on our pasts, but keep our eyes focused on Jesus instead.

What steps can you take to keep your eyes focused on Jesus instead of your past?
